We want to create, together with you, a strong statement to the rest of the world that young people are committed to keep young people safe on the worlds´ roads. Our end result will be a video with hopefully hundreds of young people from all over the world crossing the street safely, in order to raise awareness for road safety. YOURS will make sure the video will be shown to world leaders and ask attention to our joined efforts.

It is very easy to join the campaign, it only takes one hour of your time and creativity. While you shoot the video, you and your friends safety comes first! So always aim for a quiet road, with a pedestrian crossing. Also don´t forget to bring one or two friends who can watch the traffic for you while you make your video.

We have developed an instruction video that easily shows how you can participate. So go directly to our campaign webpage here and join us in our cause. If you send your video before the first of July, you have a change on winning 1000 euro for your own road safety campaign.

We are counting on you and good luck to you all!

Dakar Forum: Creating a strong African Youth Network!

Dakar Forum: Creating a strong African Youth Network!

Last week Mr Aliou Oumarou (Niger), Mr Axl Druart (Belgium) and Mr Ousman Conteh (The Gambia) attended an important road safety conference in Dakar. One of the outcomes of the forum was the importance of promoting networks and consortiums of youth organizations, especially student and road safety professionals in education, to promote road safety. Therefore the youth delegates expressed their desire to mobilize resources to form a strong African youth network in the future. Also they would like to organize an African Youth Forum to discuss their concrete participation to the proclaimed decade of action and beyond.

This article is prepared by Mr Ousman Conteh:

It will interest you that not one of the Millennium Development Goals mentions transport, yet the achievement of each and every one is dependent on reliable access to communities through transport. Whether it is the local transporter delivering construction materials to build a school in a rural area in The Gambia, Senegal, Niger or Mali or the humanitarian organisation who delivers aid to the most vulnerable people in West Africa, transport operations are the backbone to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Thus, this prompted the First Regional Road Safety Conference from The 4th-5th May 2010, Held in Dakar, Republic of Senegal under the theme: Clean, Safe and Healthy Transports Operations

The Forum was co-organized by LASER International and the Fleet Forum, under the patronage of the Ministry of Telecommunications, Tics, Earthly and Rail Transportations of Senegal. In partnership with the World Health Organization, the UNECA, the UEMOA, the American Center for Disease Control and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Prevention of the Senegal, UNEP, United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC). With  support of the partners of the private sector, Such as, TNT, North Star Alliance, SGS, SICTA Ivory Coast, the Autonomous Agency of the Road Works (AATR), the Executive Counsel of the Urban Transportations of Dakar (CETUD).

My participation was possible with support from Fleet Forum and Laser International after a consultation made by Mr Floor Lieshout, The Chief Executive Officer of YOURS, to represent National Youth Parliament and YOURS and also giving the opportunity to present on my Road Safety activities in The Gambia with special emphasis on the recent partnership being established between the National Youth Parliament and The Gambia Redcross Society on Road Safety.

My presentation highlighted our major key involvements in Road Safety Advocacy in the Gambia. Among other things we want to mobilize youth voices to engage in responsible road behavior (to avoid road crash injuries) and I mentioned our high level policy dialogue to influence some local road safety policies and legislation such as the Motor Traffic Act 2008, which prohibit the use of mobile phones while driving and compulsory use of seatbelt in The Gambia. Furthermore my presentation contained the outlines of our new partnership to develop global partnership in support of research on the impact of Road Accident in The Gambia, Training of Drivers on First Aid and The Establishment of Community First Aids Team to minimize post crash casualties and death in The Gambia. Last but least, I presented to the participants the activities of YOURS and our latest activities such as the upcoming World Crossing Campaign. This was further reiterated by Mr Axel Druart (fellow YOURS taskforce member) who also made presentation shortly after me on his activities and YOURS as well.

The Forum gathered closed to 150 participants from Africa and the rest of the World. Comprising representatives of the government, private sector, Youth, International Organisations, Road safety professional and experts amongst others. The forum is one of the major gathering of Road Safety professionals and expert in the African Continent after the Moscow Ministerial Conference and Land mark endorsement of the UN general Assembly resolution to endorsed Moscow Resolution and proclaimed the Decade Of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 in March 2010 in New York. The forum was in line with fostering partnership and share best practices that seeks to stabilized and reduced the impact of road traffic injuries in Africa and to reaffirm the engagement of the African States for the Decade of Action for the road safety in accordance with The Moscow Declaration and to use platform for information and exchanges of experiences, – showcase the good practices regarding transportations, – Give opportunity to public and private sector partnerships in support of Road Safety projects and programs in Africa

Our participation in the Forum does not only recognize the importance of young people as major victims of the road traffic injuries, but also as key actors in reversing the devastating impact of road accident, whose active involvement and participation is a significant step in reducing the negative impact of road crashes on the Continent.

The Forum witness key and best practices shared by Fleet Forum, North Star Alliance, Transaid, UNEP,GTKP, IT Mobile, Laser Europe, Responsible Young Drivers and acknowledge with valuable contribution by Northern Corridor TOTAL Group and World Bank in support of Road Safety.

One thing was certain from the Forum, there is a need for strong collaboration between the government and private sector as well as the civil society organisation. To encourage resources to support capacity development and data collection and research program and to influence positively the behavior of drivers through endorsement of quality training standards.

The forum recognized the importance of promoting networks and consortiums of youth organizations, especially student and road safety professionals in education, to promote road safety. Therefore we the youth delegates expressed our desire to mobilize resources to form a strong African youth network in the future. Furthermore we want to organize an African Youth Forum to discuss our concrete participation to the proclaimed decade of action and beyond.

Sesame Workshop joins Global Road Safety Partnership

Sesame Workshop joins Global Road Safety Partnership

(Geneva, Switzerland, and New York, NY, April 23, 2010) Sesame Workshop, the producers of the global educational brand, Sesame Street, has joined the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) in a move to contribute its educational media expertise to the worldwide effort to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities among children and families. The Global Road Safety Partnership is a partnership of business, civil society and governmental organizations dedicated to improving road safety conditions in low- and middle-income countries.

Road traffic injuries are a major but neglected public health challenge.  According to the World Health Organization’s “Global status report on road safety,” published in June 2009:

  • Every year, road crashes kill nearly 1.3 million people and injure between 20 and 50 million more.
  • Worldwide, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29, and the second cause of death for those aged 5 to 14.
  • Road traffic injuries rank ninth among the leading cause of deaths for children aged 1 to 4 year.
  • Five hundred children die every day in road crashes.
  • More children died in Africa in 1998 from road crashes than from AIDS.

“We, as an organization, recognize the immensity of this worldwide crisis,” said Gary E. Knell, President and CEO of Sesame Workshop.  “Over the years, Sesame Workshop has harnessed the power and popularity of our Muppet characters to make a meaningful and measurable difference in critical issues facing children and families, from obesity to emergency preparedness. We look forward to working with GRSP and our worldwide network of partners to communicate important road safety messages to local communities, families, and children via targeted content and materials.  Raising awareness and knowledge of vital road safety behaviors is the key to reversing these statistics.”

The announcement comes on the heels of a historic UN General Assembly resolution proclaiming 2011-2020 the Decade of Action for Road Safety.  The resolution was co-sponsored by 90 member States who, along with business, donors and civil society institutions, commit to support actions to address the global road safety crisis including increased use of seatbelts, child restraints and helmets and promoting road safety education.

As the newest member of GRSP, Sesame Workshop has been charged with utilizing its expertise in evidence-based education to create content and distribute materials that will create positive behavior changes in road safety among young children and their families.

“For over 40 years, Sesame Workshop has had an amazing ability to create and deliver on a global scale media content that has proven results in achieving behavior change,” said Andrew Pearce, Chief Executive Officer of GRSP. “By coupling this with the road safety expertise available within the Global Road Safety Partnership, we believe there is the potential to make a new and considerable contribution to improving road safety outcomes.”
Ousman Conteh to Dakar for the African Road Safety Forum

Ousman Conteh to Dakar for the African Road Safety Forum

LASER International, Fleet Forum, in partnership with WAEMU, l’UNECA, the Center for Disease Control (USA), the Ministry of Telecommunications, Tics, Rail and Ground Transportation and Health Ministry are organizing the Regional African Road Safety Forum held in Dakar (SENEGAL) from May 4th to 5th 2010. Mr Ousman Conteh will represent the Gambia Youth Parliament and YOURS during this African Forum.

Following the former “Sub Regional Road Safety Forum”, the targets of this Road Safety “Regional Conference” that will host major African countries, International guests and experts from global institutions, will be:

  • To offer participants best practices in the area of safe, clean and healthy transport.
  • To inform participants about successful public-private partnerships in the area of transport
  • To gain insights in sustainable solutions which will lead to effective transport
  • To reinforce the commitment of West African countries in United Nations ‘s “Decade of Action for Road Safety” through the settlement of a Regional Action plan inaccordancewith the Declaration of Moscow” ratified in November 2009

The Road safety Regional Forum, like the four conferences recommended by the UNRSC thus answers a new emergency of public health and development: to mobilize in order to reverse the dramatic trends of increase in road fatalities, on developing countries roads, in the upcoming years, whereas those countries are already concerned with 90% of global road deaths.

By organizing this First Regional Road safety Forum of the African countries with its partners, Senegal reaffirms his strong commitment in this “Decade of Actions for Road safety” adopted by “the Moscow Declaration” and voted by resolution in the United Nations.

It is time to integrate road safety as a key development issue and it is essential to find together regional solutions to the specific road safety issues.

Mr Ousman Conteh, YOURS Youth Taskforce member, will give a 10 minute presentation about his achievements in The Gambia, in partnership with the Youth Parliament and the Red Cross.

New website for The Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee

New website for The Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee

The Youth Committee for Road Safety in Canada has just launched their new website: www.youthroadsafety.ca. The CRSYC are supporters and founding members of YOURS since the beginning. We would like to congratulate the team for their great work and boundless energy in making the Canadians roads safe, keep it up!

Background of the Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee (CRSYC)

After returning to Canada following the World Youth Assembly, several of the delegates formed the Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee. The CRYSC has worked to recruit other young Canadians, and now has representation from many regions of the country. The CRSYC has four main goals: awareness, advocacy, networking, and promotion of the UN Declaration. To meet these goals, the CRSYC has developed a three year strategic plan.

Since 2007, the CRSYC has held a seat on the Canadian Association of Road Safety Professionals (CARSP) board of directors and is an associate member of the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA). Committee members also sit on the Global Road Safety Committee and will be working with CCMTA on the development of Road Safety Vision 2020, Canada’s national road safety strategy. In addition, the planning committee for the Canadian Multidisciplinary Road Safety Conference includes a member of CRSYC, which has been the case since the committee’s inception. They have strong support from Transport Canada, CARSP, and CCMTA.

In November 2008, the CRSYC held its first major awareness raising event in conjunction with Canada’s first Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. In addition to participating on the planning committee, the CRYSC held a national contest entitled “Rock the Hill for Road Safety” in reference to Parliament Hill where the national government is convened. The contest asked young Canadians to submit a response to the question “Road safety… what’s it to you?” The winner attended the Day of Remembrance events in the nation’s capital and presented her winning entry to those in attendance.

In March 2009 The Canadian Road Safety Youth Committee formally accepted the invitation to join the Taskforce that helped determine the strategy and activities of YOURS.

Mr Duane Ironstand, chair of CRSYC: “In light of the progress Canada has made in raising awareness, creating a network, and giving a youth voice to public policy, we feel that we are well positioned to make a significant contribution to YOURS – Youth for Road Safety. We look forward to our continued involvement with the international road safety community”
