Ducati And Sussex Road Safety Team Release ‘Stay A Hero, Stay Safe’ Film

Ducati And Sussex Road Safety Team Release ‘Stay A Hero, Stay Safe’ Film

With the aid of Ducati UK, the Sussex Safer Road Partnership has produced a creative and emotional film intended to help reduce the amount of motorcycle related accidents on UK roads and makers hope that its effective message of responsibility will reach around the world.

The short film called ‘Stay A Hero, Stay Safe’ features a Ducati 848 ridden by the father of a young boy who is waiting for him to return home. While waiting, the boy aspires to be just like his father by trying to recreate the excitement and pleasure of motorcycling with items found in his garage.

The aim of the heartwarming film is to promote the joy of motorcycling, while underlining the responsibility that riders have to themselves their families and the wider road using public.

To achieve this, the advert takes on a refreshingly positive style of communication and is effective because it conveys the inspirational role that motorcyclists must play for future generations.

Ducati was chosen because of their enthusiastic response to the positive safety message of the film and, as the Italian manufacturer is a recognised leader in creating inspirational motorcycles, the Sussex Safer Road Partnership considered it to be the perfect pairing. In the same way that the film intends to inspire safe riding now and in the future, Ducati are famous for building inspirational motorcycles.

Ken Seymour, Manager of the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, said:

“We at the Sussex Safer Roads Partnership are committed to reducing all types of collision on our road network and are raising the profile of motorcyclists as our data infers this is the time to start to remind riders of their responsibilities. ’Stay a Hero’ isn’t your usual shocking public service film. Instead we hope that it will connect with the motorcycle community and generate discussion that helps to protect people on our roads.”

The film was made by Alexander Commercials and is the second pairing of Writer/Director Daniel Cox and Producer Sarah Alexander and its dialogue-free story is hoped to increase its global reach and potential to deliver the important safety message of responsibility to the world’s motorcycling community.

The film can be viewed on this page and at:

Road Safety Course for Post Graduates. Opportunity for road safety enthusiasts.

Road Safety Course for Post Graduates. Opportunity for road safety enthusiasts.

Delft University of Technology (NL) and the Foundation Road Safety for All are preparing an International Road Safety Educational Program. This initiative intends to strongly support the United Nations Decade of Action for Road safety 2011 – 2020.

In the past 30 years The Netherlands developed a leading position in the road safety field. Our present program builds on that experience and intends to help LMIC’s in developing their own road safety capacity.

Their philosophy is quite simple: they intend to support the development of educational programs in the LMIC’s, i.e. both at universities and for practitioners. Therefore our program is based on a Train the Trainers approach. The first step will be a post graduate course in the Netherlands for road safety professionals from LMIC´s.

Delft University of Technology with Professor Fred Wegman takes the lead of the program. Road Safety for All and Delft Post Graduate Education support the development.

The educational program to be developed contains three components:

Postgraduate course on road safety
The Program for Practical trainings (level 3) supports educational institutions and training centres to provide short courses to local professionals, involving practical handbooks and guidelines about infrastructure engineering and education and enforcement programs.

The postgraduate course intends to train the trainers and to support professionals in developing their road safety organization, designing road safety plans and developing educational programs at universities and for practical training.

Graduate courses for master students
The program for graduate students helps universities to develop and design courses for master programs. Road safety curricula will be developed to support the development of strong programs at local universities

Practical training courses for professionals

The postgraduate course, as described in this paper, will be given bi-annually and will start in 2011, at the beginning of the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020.

You can find out more information about the course here.

The 11th Edition Michelin Challenge Bibendum the global summit

The 11th Edition Michelin Challenge Bibendum the global summit

The 11th edition of Michelin Challenge Bibendum was recently concluded in Berlin, held from May 18 to 22. Promoting the overall theme of cleaner, safer, more connected mobility, the event was yet another example of Michelin Group’s commitment to sustainable and safer road mobility.

The purpose of the Michelin Challenge Bibendum 2011 is to bring together a broad array of stakeholders – from car lovers to decision makers – while also involving the general public, with the goal of making the sustainable mobility of the future more widely accessible.

Flagged off by Michel Rollier, Managing General Partner, Michelin Group, the 5-day event was dedicated to the recently signed Global Road Safety Commitment by Michelin to support the Decade of Action for Road Safety, 2011-2020, which is actively promoted by the United Nations.

Speaking on the occasion Michel Rollier, Managing Partner of the Michelin Group said, “The spirit that guides the Michelin Challenge Bibendum is to show that the automobile’s capacity for improvement is alive and well and that road transport has a bright future serving society’s needs. We can and must reduce the gap between the scope of the challenges we face – which include energy, environmental and safety issues, as well as universal access to efficient mobility solutions – and the slow pace of decision-making processes around the world. Innovation and its organized deployment require close coordination between the public and private sectors. Let’s look to the future without fear, keeping a totally open mind with regard to all both local and global solutions. What’s truly important is not to put off making the tough choices required for everyone’s well-being. We’re counting on the experts’ discussions and the events in Berlin to help us take an additional step toward ensuring sustainable road mobility that is cleaner, safer and connected.”

Michelin Challenge Bibendum is the global summit for sustainable mobility. It’s the world’s only event that brings together car and truck makers, academics, equipment manufacturers, energy suppliers, research institutes, public authorities and nongovernmental organizations to forge a shared vision of tomorrow’s safer, cleaner transportation.

Speaking at the event, Prashant Prabhu, President, Michelin Group AIM (Asia, India and the Middle East region), said “Highlighting the theme of Safer,Cleaner, and Connected, the 11th edition of Challenge Bibendum has been able to bring together like-minded individuals who are concerned about sustainable mobility.  Michelin Challenge Bibendum is charting the way towards mobility that is more fuel-efficient, cleaner, and safer. He also added, “In a country like India, which is growing rapidly, the issues of climate change, energy security, local pollution, road safety and urban congestion are critical considerations for sustainable growth. By tapping global experiences and best practices, India has an opportunity to progress more rapidly by leapfrogging technologies, allowing the country to design and adopt a mobility plan best suited to its needs. To drive a radical shift to new technologies and new ways of looking at mobility, a real spirit of change is required.  It is often best exemplified in emerging economies and India is no exception to the same.”

Commenting on Michelin’s plan for growth in India, Mr. Prabhu said, “Michelin is committed to strengthening its presence in India as it augments Michelin’s capability to cater to the huge customer base in the country with its world-class, best engineered quality products.”

Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety: Application Call

Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety: Application Call

The Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety, set up in the name of Mr Nelson Mandela’s young grandaughter who passed away in a trafic road crash, is calling for applications for its scholarship. The applications are open for young South African young people who have illustrated leadership in road safety.

As a key part of the Scholarship Programme and to contribute to the objectives of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, the Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety has been launched.

About the Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety

The Scholarship is an initiative which contributes to the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. The Decade itself has been agreed by the UN General Assembly and aims to ‘stabilize and reduce’ the growing number of road fatalities and injuries around the world. Road crashes are already the number one killer of young people aged over 10 worldwide. The Commission for Global Road Safety is calling for a focus on the protection of children and young people.

Visit www.decadeofaction.org and www.makeroadssafe.org

The Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety has been established as a fitting tribute to a young girl who clearly embodied a love of learning, and who relished the opportunities which her education was giving her. It would reflect the ethos and values of the Mandela family and Nelson Mandela Foundation in helping young people make a difference to their own communities and society as a whole.

It has been set up to inspire the young leaders of South Africa to join a global movement as represented by the UN Decade of Action, which aims to save millions of lives over the next 10 years. The purpose of the Scholarship would be to offer young South Africans the opportunity to learn with and from other talented professionals from around the world with the common aim of improving road safety for communities in their home countries.

On an annual basis between 12-14 Scholars from around the world take part in the FIA Foundation Scholarship programme. This initiative helps to build capacity and leadership in road safety particularly in developing and emerging economies. The Zenani Mandela Scholarship would exclusively support a candidate from South Africa, to help develop their expertise in all key aspects of road safety management and policy making.

The Zenani Mandela Scholarship for Road Safety is a joint initiative of the FIA Foundation, Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Department of Transport, Republic of South Africa.
