YOUTH LEADING THE CHANGE FOR SAFER STREETS IN MEXICO

This program is supported by Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety and is developed in collaboration with YOURS (Youth for Road Safety), with the participation of the Liga Peatonal and the Circuito Exterior Mexiquense as strategic allies, within the framework of the FIA Foundation’s Child Health Initiative. Mobilizing young leaders in the State of Mexico to promote safer mobility and inspire action in their communities.

Overview

Road traffic injuries remain one of the leading causes of death among young people.

In Chimalhuacán, State of Mexico, the situation is increasingly urgent. Motorcycle crashes are on the rise, and young people are among the most affected. Yet, despite being the most impacted, youth are rarely included in shaping the solutions.

This program exists to change that. By equipping young people with knowledge, tools and leadership skills, the programme enables them to take action, influence their peers and contribute to safer, more inclusive streets.

what we do

What the Project Does

This program empowers young people to become leaders and advocates for road safety through a model based on learning, action and community impact.

  • Youth Leadership: The programme brings together young leaders from the State of Mexico, known as Pîhui Leaders. Pîhui, a word from the Nahuatl language meaning “to multiply,” reflects the programme’s core idea: youth creating change that spreads across their communities.
  • Education and Community Engagement: Through a dynamic training process based on the YOURS methodology, Pîhui Leaders deliver road safety sessions in schools and universities. This peer-to-peer approach creates meaningful connections and encourages safer behaviours among young people.
  • Awareness and Advocacy: The project also includes a youth-led digital campaign designed to raise awareness about road safety challenges and inspire action.

This first generation demonstrates that young people are interested and can be protagonists in building safer environments to actively contribute to transforming the reality or road safety in Mexico.
